If your time is scarcer than your budget, yes: you can land in Kigali at breakfast and be at the trailhead lodges by lunch — against a full travel day (or an extra flight) to reach Bwindi in Uganda. The treks are also generally gentler, on volcano slopes rather than Bwindi’s steep tangles. If budget leads, Uganda’s $800 permit wins.
Rwanda
A thousand green hills, the world’s most accessible gorillas, and the cleanest capital in Africa. Small country, complete journey.
| Best for | Gorillas without long overland days, canopy-level chimps, a compact luxury circuit |
|---|---|
| Time needed | 3 nights for gorillas alone; 6–7 for the full triangle |
| Gorilla permit | $1,500 per person — Volcanoes NP, 2h from Kigali airport |
| Best months | Jun–Sep and Dec–Feb; short green seasons are trekkable and beautiful |
| Pairs with | Uganda (Bwindi is 4–5h from Volcanoes NP) or a Tanzania finish |
Is Rwanda’s $1,500 gorilla permit worth it?
The complete Rwanda triangle
Volcanoes NP for the gorillas and golden monkeys, in the Virunga chain where Dian Fossey worked. Nyungwe, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, for chimpanzees and a canopy walkway sixty metres over the treetops. Akagera, in the east, for the comeback story — lions returned in 2015, black rhino in 2017, and the park now runs Big Five game drives beside papyrus lakes. Between them: tea terraces, Lake Kivu’s inland beaches, and roads that are, by regional consensus, the best in East Africa.
Kigali deserves a deliberate day, not a transit blur: the genocide memorial is a necessary, profoundly moving hour, and the city’s cafés and galleries recast everything you think you know about the region.
Honest trade-offs
- Rwanda has priced itself deliberately high-end. Permits and the flagship lodges target the luxury market; mid-range options exist but thin out fast at Volcanoes NP.
- Akagera is excellent, not Serengeti. It is a half-day-scale park with a moving story — pair it with Tanzania if raw game density is the goal.
Rwanda questions we answer every week
Can I do gorillas in Rwanda in three days?
Comfortably: arrive Kigali day one and drive up (2h), trek day two, fly out day three. It is the tightest credible gorilla itinerary in Africa — and why time-poor travelers choose Rwanda despite the permit price.
Rwanda or Uganda — can I combine them?
Yes, and it is often the smartest route: trek Bwindi on Uganda’s $800 permit, then exit through Kigali (4–5h by road) rather than backtracking to Entebbe. One extra border, one saved day.
