Kilimanjaro — Machame Route
Seven days on the mountain, an acclimatization profile that earns its ~85% summit rate, and a crew treated the way a crew should be.
The climb, day by day
- Day 1
Arrive & gear check
Met at Kilimanjaro airport, evening briefing and full kit inspection in Arusha — anything missing is rented tonight, not discovered at 4,000 m.
Arusha lodge
- Day 2
Machame Gate → Machame Camp · 3,010 m
Five hours climbing through cloud-forest, colobus monkeys overhead. The daily rhythm begins: pole pole, drink constantly, arrive to a hot dinner.
- Day 3
Shira Plateau · 3,845 m
Out of the forest into giant heather and the first full view of the summit dome. Short, steep day — altitude is now the teacher.
- Day 4
Lava Tower → Barranco · sleep 3,960 m
The route’s quiet masterpiece: climb to 4,630 m for lunch beneath the Lava Tower, descend to sleep in the Barranco valley among giant groundsel. Climb high, sleep low — this day is why Machame summits.
- Day 5
Barranco Wall → Karanga · 4,035 m
The wall looks alarming and climbs like a staircase — hands out of pockets for ninety minutes, then rolling ridges to Karanga. Short day, deliberate: rest this afternoon.
- Day 6
Barafu base camp · 4,673 m
Three hours to base camp, early dinner, gear laid out, asleep by 19:00. Wake at 23:00 for tea and the long night.
- Day 7
Summit — Uhuru Peak · 5,895 m
Six to eight dark, cold, slow hours to Stella Point; sunrise floods the glaciers; forty-five more minutes to the sign every trekker knows. Then down — all the way to Mweka forest camp, 3,000 m of descent your knees will remember.
- Day 8
Mweka Gate → Arusha
Final forest hours, summit certificates, the crew’s farewell song, and the best shower of your life back in Arusha.

- Day 9
Home — or the beach
Fly home, or do what most of our climbers do: 90 minutes to Zanzibar and horizontal recovery on the sand.
