For game and walking safaris, May–October: the bush thins, animals gather at the Luangwa River, and the walking is superb. For Victoria Falls at full roar, March–June, just after the rains — though the spray can veil the view. September–October is the sweet spot for combining both, with the falls lower but the game at its best.

What is a walking safari actually like?
South Luangwa invented it, and it remains the finest place on earth to do it. You set out at dawn with an armed national-parks scout and a specialist guide, on foot, reading tracks and dung and broken grass. It is not about covering distance or chasing big cats — it is about the small things a vehicle roars past: a chameleon, a spider’s architecture, the way a herd of puku decides you are safe. When you do come upon elephant or buffalo on foot, the feeling is entirely different from a game drive. It rearranges your sense of scale.
Honest trade-offs
- The falls change dramatically by season. High water (Apr–Jun) is deafening and drenching but can be all spray; low water (Oct–Nov) reveals the rock face and opens Devil’s Pool on the Zambian side. We tell you which you’re getting.
- It is a wilder, simpler safari than the polished circuits. That is the appeal — and it means longer transfers and fewer frills. Guests who want old Africa love it; those who want gloss should look elsewhere.
- Green season (Nov–Mar) floods some camps and closes walking, but brings emerald light, newborns and low rates for those who don’t mind rain.

Victoria Falls from Zambia or Zimbabwe?
Both sides are spectacular and a bridge apart. Zambia gives you the edge-of-the-falls thrill (Knife-Edge Bridge, and Devil’s Pool at low water); Zimbabwe gives the classic wide postcard view. With two nights you can, and should, see both.
Is a walking safari safe?
Yes, conducted properly — which is the only way we run it. An armed scout leads, a licensed guide interprets, group sizes are small, and you are briefed thoroughly. Guides read animal behavior for a living and keep respectful distances. It is a controlled, extraordinary experience, not a stunt.
How does Zambia combine with the rest of the south?
Beautifully. Livingstone (the falls) is a short hop from Botswana’s Chobe and a gateway into a Zambia–Botswana–Namibia arc. Many of our guests pair the falls with the Okavango Delta, then the Namib dunes — water, delta and desert in one journey.
