North vs east coast: which Zanzibar beach is right for you?
Which coast of Zanzibar should you stay on?
Stay north (Nungwi/Kendwa) if swimming whenever you feel like it matters most — it is the only coast where the tide barely changes the beach. Stay east (Matemwe, Paje, Jambiani) for quieter sand, kitesurfing, reef lagoons and village life — and accept that the ocean walks out several hundred metres twice a day. Neither is better; they are different holidays.
The tide, explained the way resorts won't
Zanzibar's east coast sits behind a fringing reef with one of the larger tidal ranges in the region. At low tide the lagoon empties: the water can retreat 300–500 metres, exposing sandbars, starfish and seaweed farms. Locals fish it, kitesurfers love the flat shallows, photographers get the day's best pictures — and guests who expected an infinity of swimmable blue write angry reviews. The north tip escapes this geometry almost entirely: Nungwi and Kendwa hold deep, swimmable water essentially all day.

When does this choice matter least?
June to October, when the whole island runs dry, breezy and blue. In those months the honest answer is that both coasts deliver; pick by atmosphere. The choice matters most November–March, when tide timing on the east coincides badly with midday heat on some dates — we check the actual tide tables for your week before recommending. Yes, really.
