Tarangire
In the dry months, the river here pulls in elephant herds by the hundred. Most itineraries give it three hours. We think it deserves a night.

What is Tarangire actually like?
In the dry season, extraordinary: the river is the only water for miles, and elephant, buffalo, zebra and wildebeest funnel to it daily, watched by lion prides and the odd leopard draped in a sausage tree. The baobabs — some over a thousand years old — give the park a landscape unlike anywhere else on the circuit. Birders log 500+ species. In the green months (December–March) the big herds disperse and the park relaxes into a quiet, pretty sideshow — we say so, and route you accordingly.
Honest trade-offs
- It is seasonal. June–October is world-class; March is not. We only sell it in the months it earns.
- Tsetse flies live here. Mostly in the woodland, mostly annoying rather than dangerous. Wear khaki, not blue, and keep moving at the flies’ hotspots — your guide knows them.
- Day-trippers skim the north. The crowds thin dramatically past the river junction; a night inside the park buys you the empty south.

They do different jobs. The Serengeti is scale and cats; Tarangire is intimacy and elephants. In the dry season Tarangire’s river scenes rival anything in Tanzania — and it costs a fraction of a Serengeti day to include on your way through.
How long should I spend in Tarangire?
One night for most journeys — a full afternoon and the next morning inside the park. Photographers and elephant lovers happily take two, using the second day to reach the quiet Silale swamps in the south.
