Include it when it costs you nothing to include — a game drive through on the road you were driving anyway, or a treetop-walkway stop with lunch. Skip it if adding it would cut a Serengeti or Tarangire night; the bigger parks out-deliver it head-to-head.
Lake Manyara

What is special about it?
Variety per kilometre. In a two-hour drive you pass jungle-thick groundwater forest loud with blue monkeys, open floodplain with buffalo and giraffe, hippo pools, and — after good rains — a pink haze of thousands of flamingos on the soda lake. The famous tree-climbing lions are real but fickle; think of one as a bonus, not a promise. Birders should simply plan the full morning: over 400 species make this the richest quick birding stop on the circuit.
Honest trade-offs
- The flamingos follow the water. In dry years the lake shrinks and the birds move to other Rift lakes. We check before we promise.
- It photographs smaller than it sounds. The park is a narrow strip; drives repeat the same north–south road. Half a day is genuinely enough.
- Mto wa Mbu town borders the gate — great for a real market visit, less so for a wilderness feel at the entrance.

Will I see the tree-climbing lions?
Maybe — the behavior is real and this park made it famous, but the lions climb when flies, heat or wet grass push them up, not on schedule. Roughly one visit in three catches it. Manyara’s certainty is the forest, the elephants and the birds.
When are the flamingos at Lake Manyara?
Typically strongest in and after the rains — November–December and March–June — when the algae bloom feeds them. Numbers swing year to year with water levels; we give you a current answer, not an old photograph.
